STEVE: Do you have some ideas?

CHRISTINE: I guess hope. Maybe it’s hope.

STEVE: Mmm-hmm.

CHRISTINE: Yes, yes, I have. And I’m, I’m trying to take one day at a time.

STEVE: Mmm-hmm.

CHRISTINE: For a while every day you go to school. It’s a miracle …

STEVE: Mmm-hmm.

CHRISTINE: I hope.

STEVE: Mmm-hmm. Mmm-hmm.

CHRISTINE: It shouldn’t be [a miracle] because when you are 17, you should get to school.

STEVE: Yes, it’s your job in life.

CHRISTINE: Yes. Okay. But …

HARRY: I think we can tell you some of the things we’ve tried.

STEVE: Oh, god … I don’t want to do that now. No. I can imagine enough.

HARRY: He has a very irregular pattern.

STEVE: Mmm-hmm.

HARRY: You can imagine, yes.

STEVE: And you can correct me if I screw up too badly.

What do the clients know? The therapist doesn’t know what they know and the clients don’t know until they answer. In doing this, it is important not to lead, not to do a Socratic dialogue, but to really stay right there on the surface of what they are saying and find a way to ask the right question. If they cannot answer it, the therapist has either asked the wrong question or asked it in the wrong way. Oddly, therapy is a societal event in which the therapist is assumed to be the expert; however, in SFBT we try to find out what the client knows.
